Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association and other agencies quickly contained five small fires near Riddle on Thursday morning.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachael Pope said at approximately 8:30 a.m. crews from DFPA along with Riddle Fire Protection District, Canyonville-South Umpqua Fire District, Tri City Rural Fire Protection District and Cow Creek Tribal Fire Management responded to reports of small vegetation fires.

Pope said the first fire was reported near the intersection of Pruner Road and Boyer Road in Riddle. As firefighters responded, additional reports came in of nearby fires along the roadway. Crews quickly located all five fires and initiated suppression actions.

Thanks to the rapid response and coordinated efforts of responding agencies, all the fires were quickly extinguished, preventing further spread and minimizing impacts to the surrounding area. By mid-morning, all five fires were in mop-up status.

Pope said the preliminary findings indicate that the cause of each of the five fires was vehicle related. Investigators will continue conducting a detained investigation to determine the specific details surrounding each ignition.

Pope said with warm temperatures, dry vegetation, and elevated fire danger across the district, DFPA reminds the public that even small roadside ignitions can quickly become fast-moving wildfires. Motorists are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained to reduce the risk of starting a wildfire. Never park or drive through dry vegetation, and when towing a trailer, make sure safety chains are properly secured and not dragging.
