ROSEBURG LIBRARY SELECTED FOR SMITHSONIAN ASSOCIATES PROJECT

July 7, 2026 3:50 a.m.

Roseburg Public Library will expand their public programming as a member of the first cohort of the Smithsonian Associates Rural Library Program.

A city release said the Roseburg library is one of only 16 libraries across the nation selected for this honor. It has been granted access to Smithsonian Associates’ vast catalog of world-class programs. Monthly events at the library on Northeast Diamond Lake Boulevard will consist of online presentations, either live or prerecorded. All programs are free and open to the public.

The first program is “Birding in Costa Rica” at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 22nd presented in partnership with Umpqua Bird Alliance.

Naturalist and photographer Matt Felperin will lead a visual exploration of Costa Rica’s Caribbean lowlands, foothills and highland cloud forests. Traversing forest trails, river edges and moss-draped ridgelines, Felperin documents the remarkable avian variety of these globally significant biodiversity hotspots.

Roseburg Public Library Director Kris Wiley said, “We are thrilled to offer more learning opportunities for adults, especially from such an esteemed organization as the Smithsonian”. Wiley said, “We will reach out to community members to help select programs as the year progresses”.
