A contractor for the Oregon Department of Transportation continues repair work on both Interstate 5 bridges in the Winchester area.
An ODOT update said crews are resurfacing the travel lanes, reconstructing joints, upgrading bridge rails and adding protective screenings. Construction takes place at night, involving only one bridge at a time, starting with the southbound bridge. A concrete barrier has been placed along the center line of that bridge, to keep workers safe from high-speed traffic in the adjacent lane.
This month on weeknights from Sunday nights through Friday mornings from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the southbound bridge is limited to a single lane that is 10 feet wide. A detour is available for trucks and wide loads, departing the freeway at the Winchester Exit 129 and taking Del Rio Road and Garden Valley Road and Boulevard to Exit 125. When both southbound lanes are open, trucks between 10 feet and 14 feet 10 inches in width should use the left lane.
Through the end of June, the I-5 Exit 129 southbound on-ramp will be intermittently closed at night. At other times, the ramp will be restricted to 10 feet in width.
The speed limit is reduced to 50 miles per hour in the southbound direction of the freeway through the work zone. Drivers are encouraged to slow down, use caution, and watch for workers and construction vehicles.
Both northbound lanes will remain open through the month of June. All lanes will be open for Independence Day weekend and Labor Day weekend.
