Crews with Central Douglas Fire & Rescue dealt with a reported structure fire on Saturday.
A CDF&R release said crews were dispatched to the fire on Center Street in Winston at approximately 6:15 a.m. Fire Marshal Josh Waechter said initial reports indicated that the back of the home was fully involved in the fire. Waechter said first-arriving units found heavy black smoke exiting from the front windows of the structure, with additional involvement in the garage. Within sixteen minutes of arriving on the scene, the fire was knocked down and extinguished.
Waechter said CDF&R responded to this incident with three pieces of fire equipment and one command unit, totaling ten paid and volunteer personnel. CDF&R was assisted by Umpqua Valley Ambulance and Winston Police Department. A fire investigation determined the fire to be accidental and most likely caused by a heat lamp on the back porch used for baby ducklings.
Waechter said CDF&R would like to remind citizens to keep appliances away from combustibles while in use. Waechter said heating lamps are a cause of several fires annually within CDF&R’s response area.
