The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians are doing rehabilitation work on the former Rite Aid building on Southeast Jackson Street in downtown Roseburg.
Cow Creek Communications and Marketing Director Lindsay Campman told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that crews are currently working on asbestos removal and lead paint mitigation. Campman said the building was neglected for a long time and in order to prepare it for its next phase of life, the Tribe needs to safely remove the materials and perform general facility cleanup.
The next part of the project will be roofing repair, though no timeline for that work has been set.
Campman said the Tribe has combined its funding with a $400,000 grant from Thrive Umpqua and the Oregon Main Street Revitalization program to get the work accomplished for this year. Thrive Umpqua is part of the Oregon Main Street Network and can disburse funds received as they see fit.
Campman said the Tribe is committed to the project for the long haul and staying true to their vision – eventually having a building that is beautiful, is a benefit to the community, and becomes a source of Roseburg pride.
The Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Tribe of Indians purchased the former Rite Aid building and the adjacent former Safeway lot in June of 2024.
