February 12, 2026 3:20 a.m.

The 25th anniversary of the Celebration of Literacy is underway with more events yet to come.

Sponsored by Altrusa International and the Umpqua Literacy Council, the Celebration of Literacy has already had the annual literacy play for young people, presented in the Rose Theater at Roseburg High School. Special events are continuing at libraries around the county.

Celebration of Literacy is held every year to emphasize the importance of reading.

The signature event is “Once Upon a Dragon”. It will be held on Saturday, February 21st from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Wildlife Safari in Winston. Those with a driver’s license with a Douglas County address will get free entry to the drive through. In the Safari Village, there will be a book giveaway, book exchange, animal encounters, crafts, a fishing booth and even tattoos. Every child in attendance will receive a free book.
