A transient was jailed following the report of a theft from a truck stop early Monday morning.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said at approximately 8:10 a.m. a deputy responded to the business in the 800 block of John Long Road at Rice Hill. An employee reported that just after 3:30 a.m. a man had stolen multiple bags of M&Ms and left the store.
The deputy located a man matching the description of the suspect walking along the shoulder of Interstate 5 near Rice Hill. Upon contact, the suspect allegedly became verbally agitated, yelled incoherently and fled on foot. Oregon State Police troopers arrived and assisted with placing the man, a 39-year-old, in handcuffs, due to his behavior. The man refused to identify himself and continued yelling while he was advised of his Miranda rights. Surveillance footage confirmed the theft.
The man was transported to corrections where he later identified himself. The man was charged with third-degree theft and second-degree disorderly conduct. He was detained without bail and was released on Tuesday morning.
