Roseburg Police jailed a man for an alleged assault incident on Friday evening.
An RPD report said at 6:55 p.m. officers responded to the 200 block of Northeast Jackson Street after dispatch received multiple calls regarding a woman who was in front of an establishment with lacerations to her hand and wrist. The victim said she had been attacked by a male with a knife, as he came out of a nearby portable bathroom, while she was waiting outside.
The victim gave a description of the suspect to officers. The man, identified as 42-year-old Stephen Bates, was ultimately located about 100 yards away. Bates was taken into custody without incident. Officers reportedly located a knife in his pocket, which had blood on it. Witnesses also observed Bates near the area where the attack took place, just prior to it occurring and identified him once he was detained.
Bates was transported to corrections and charged with second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, and menacing. Bail was set at $6,250.
