ROSEBURG POLICE JAIL MAN FOLLOWING DISTURBANCE INVOLVING MACHETE

Roseburg Police jailed a man following a disturbance on Monday.

An RPD report said just before 6:00 p.m. officers responded to the 900 block of Southeast Mill Street after a caller said a man was swinging a machete at people. After an investigation, it was discovered that all parties had a disagreement regarding camping. During the altercation, 47-year-old Robert Hathaway allegedly grabbed a machete and began swinging it at others. Hathaway struck one victim in the arm with the machete, though it did not cut his arm. He also reportedly slashed the tires of another victim’s bicycle with the machete.

Hathaway was taken into custody without incident. He was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, four counts of menacing, second-degree counts of attempted assault, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief, attempting to commit a class C felony and failure to register as a sex offender.

Hathaway was detained without bail.
