DFPA CONTINUES LIGHTNING RECONNAISSANCE FOLLOWING FRIDAY STORM

September 6, 2025 7:50 a.m.

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association continue with lightning reconnaissance and initial attack following the early morning lightning storm on Friday.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said of the 48 registered lightning strikes recorded across land protected by DFPA, only two have resulted in confirmed fires:

*Fate Creek Fire near Myrtle Creek – The 1.2-acre fire has been 100 percent trailed, plumbed, and is in mop-up status.

*Deadman Fire 6.5 miles northeast of Tiller – Suppression of this confirmed lightning-struck tree fire has been turned over to the Umpqua National Forest and Cow Creek Fire Management.

Pope said thanks to significant progress, resources are continuing to demobilize at the Dads Creek Fire in the Glendale area. Currently 75 firefighters, heavy equipment operators and overhead command staff remain assigned. Mop-up operations are now operating only during daytime shifts. Mop-up efforts will continue until no heat is detected within 300 feet of the perimeter. Smoke may still be visible in the area as crews progress. The temporary road closure will stay in place until firefighters have cleared the area.

Pope said this will be the final update on these fires.
