Crater Lake National Park, in partnership with the Friends of Crater Lake and Discover Klamath, will host the 11th annual “Ride the Rim” days this Saturday and again next Saturday, September 13th.
A National Park Service release said on these consecutive Saturdays, East Rim Drive will be open only to non-motorized recreation including biking, hiking, and running from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The route around the lake is approximately 25 miles with 3,500 feet of climbing at elevations over 7,000 feet. Registration for the event is now closed. While the event is free, normal park entrance fees apply. The entrance fee can be paid in advance: Crater Lake National Park Site Pass in Oregon – Recreation.gov. Visitors are advised to print or download their pass to their phone before arriving at the park.
The release said designated event parking for Ride the Rim includes roadside parking along East Rim Drive, the park headquarters complex, and Picnic Hill in Rim Village. Event participants are encouraged to share rides to help ease parking congestion and are asked to only park where signs read “Event Parking Only”. Parking areas will be managed with volunteers and National Park Service staff beginning at 7:00 a.m. on both Saturdays.
A free shuttle will be available to transport event participants from designated parking areas to East Rim Drive starting locations. Shuttles will not transport bicycles. Event participants must drop their bicycles off at the desired starting locations prior to parking if they choose not to begin their ride from their parking location.
Crater Lake Acting Superintendent Elexis Fredy said, “Ride the Rim continues to grow in popularity each year”. Fredy said, “It provides a unique opportunity to experience East Rim Drive without vehicle traffic. While it’s a strenuous endeavor, the rewards of a slower pace, opportunities for quiet reflections, and healthy, vigorous recreation makes it a special experience for many people”.
