August 29, 2025 11:00 a.m.

The Sugar Loaf Fire in the Cottage Grove Ranger District of the Umpqua National Forest has grown slightly to 53 acres, as of midday on Friday.

An update from Northwest Incident Management Team 13 said the growth is taking place primarily on the north and south corners of the fire. Firefighters have dug direct lines on over 80 percent of the perimeter of the fire. On the western flank, dozers have established two road systems to get crews close to the fire edge. Air resources and ground crews have been working jointly. Helicopters continue to drop water to slow fire progression while firefighters complete direct lines. To date, helicopters and scoopers have dropped a combined 30,000 gallons of water on the Sugar Loaf Fire.

190 personnel are assigned to the fire. The forest remains in High fire danger with Level 2 Public Use Restrictions in effect.
