The Burnt Mountain Fire is estimated at 20-acres as of midday on Saturday.
An update from the Douglas Forest Protective Association said the fire began at approximately 2:15 p.m. Friday afternoon near Burnt Mountain Access Road, approximately 8 miles northwest of Tenmile. Crews from DFPA and the Coos Forest Protective Association both responded to the fire.
DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said upon arriving at the scene, crews found a moderately active slash and timber fire in difficult, steep terrain within a non-operational logging unit. Pope said DFPA’s dozer was used to clear an old logging road, improving access for ground crews. Aerial resources helped contain the fire’s growth as crews gained access. They successfully trailed and plumbed the fire’s perimeter between Friday night and Saturday morning.
Pope said Saturday’s day shift will continue to tighten control lines and begin mopping up the exterior. Aggressive work will continue throughout the day. Smoke will be visible in the area as progress continues.
The Burnt Mountain Fire does not pose a threat to any homes or structures. The fire has been confirmed to be human-caused but is still under investigation.
The fire danger level across lands protected by DFPA will rise to Extreme on Sunday morning. Complete fire restriction information is available at: www.dfpa.net
