The Milepost 124 Fire on Mt. Nebo is 75 percent mopped up, as of Friday afternoon.
The final update on the fire from the Douglas Forest Protective Association said response to the fire began Thursday night at about 6:30 p.m. Crews from DFPA, Roseburg Fire Department, Central Douglas Fire & Rescue and the Roseburg Police Department were on scene along Interstate Five southbound at milepost 124, just south of West Harvard Avenue.
The fire was ultimately listed at just under 50 acres.
DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said overnight into Friday, crews trailed and plumbed the entire perimeter of the fire and started mop-up operations. Pope said DFPA’s day shift Friday consisted of one type 1 water tender, three type 6 engines, one type 3 engine, a DFPA squad, and overhead command.
Crews will continue mop-up until the fire is fully contained. Smoke may still be visible as further progress is made. Pope said the public is asked to be aware of firefighters along the freeway and to prioritize their safety.
The fire was human caused and is under investigation.
Pope said it is crucial that drones not be used over or near wildfires. Unauthorized drone flights pose serious risks to firefighters, public safety and wildfire suppression efforts. Flying drones over wildfires may violate federal, state, and local laws. Those found guilty of endangering manned aircraft or people on the ground with a drone could face civil penalties, including fines of up to $25,000, and possibly criminal charges.
Fire danger remains high in the Douglas District. Information on restrictions is available at www.dfpa.net
