On Wednesday, designated as National Girls and Women in Sports Day, House Republican Leader Christine Drazan introduced legislation she says will restore safety and fairness for female athletes in Oregon’s K-12 schools.

A release said LC 3895 requires schools to designate athletic competitions and extracurricular sports according to biological sex. The legislative concept prohibits biological males from participating in athletic competitions or extracurricular sports designated for biological females.

Drazan said, “Women have fought for – and earned – respect and support for themselves in sports and have made incredible gains in doing so”. Drazan said, “We can respect the dignity of every individual without endangering women in sports”.

Drazan said a statewide pole commissioned by House Republicans revealed that 60 percent of Oregonians oppose OSAA’s current policy allowing biological males to compete in women’s sports”.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order titled, “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports”, which bans biological males from competing in women’s by aligning federal policy with Title IX – a law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex for schools that receive federal funding.

Drazan’s bill will be introduced later in the week and will include sponsors from both the House and Senate.
