CELEBRATION OF LITERACY SET TO CONTINUE FOR ANOTHER YEAR

January 21, 2025 3:20 a.m.

The Celebration of Literacy is set to continue for another year.

Sponsored by the Altrusa Club of Roseburg and the Umpqua Literacy Council, this year’s series of events will begin next week and continue throughout the month of February.

Since the pandemic, the emphasis has been placed on giving books away. At every event, books will be provided for the children of Douglas County.

The goals of COL are to show the public, especially children, that reading is foundational to all learning, critical for future success and can be entertaining.

The signature event will be held at Wildlife Safari on Saturday, February 15th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will include a free drive-through of the park for vehicles from Douglas County. Included in the day’s activities will be free books in the Ford Room, face-painting, origami making, a fishpond and much more.

A literacy play, written, produced and performed by the Roseburg High School Drama Department, will be offered for elementary school students next week in the Rose Theater.

A number of libraries will be having special events as well.
