WINTER STORM WATCH STARTS SUNDAY FOR MOUNTAIN AREAS

A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Sunday afternoon through Monday evening for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is possible with accumulations between 5 and 20 inches. Winds could gust as high as 40 miles per hour.

The Watch area includes the Southern Oregon Cascades and Siskiyou Mountains. It applies to portions of highways 138, 230, 58, 140 and 66, along with Diamond Lake, Willamette Pass, Union Creek and Lake of the Woods.

The Watch area also includes the eastern Douglas County foothills and applies to Toketee Falls. Heavy snow is possible in this area above 2,500 feet with accumulations between 5 and 15 inches possible.

Forecasters said roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Snowfall levels will be around 6,000 feet early Sunday afternoon then rapidly fall to pass levels by Sunday evening. Snow is likely to continue into Monday evening.
