ADDITIONAL RESOURCES TO HELP WITH SEARCH FOR 5-YEAR-OLD BOY

A Coos County 5-year-old remains missing with additional resources being added to the search effort.

Coos County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Christopher Gill said Joshua James McCoy was reported missing at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Gill said the boy, who has autism, has not been seen since taking a nap with his mother that afternoon. When the mother woke up, the boy was not at their residence on Stage Road, in the Hauser area.

After an initial assessment was completed, local teams began searching the surrounding areas. Their efforts intensified on Sunday morning, using drones, deputies, overwatch and detectives. Team assignments were given, and the area was canvassed using real-time GPS for tracking. Gill said some clues were found, but nothing definitive.

As of late Monday, California Oregon Regional Search and Rescue Task Force, known as CORSAR, has continued the search and rescue effort between 7 counties in Oregon and California. It has included 61 ground personnel, aerial support and K9 resources. Part of the effort includes members of Douglas County Search and Rescue, according to Lieutenant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Gill said CCSO has requested assistance from state and federal agencies. Those personnel are expected to be arriving Tuesday.

Gill said while citizen offers of aid are much appreciated, the search area is limited in capacity, and the concern is that evidence would be missed or tainted with an overwhelming number of personnel on scene.

Gill said nothing is being ruled out at this time, and all possible avenues are being considered. He said CCSO maintains hope that Joshua will be found alive and well.

Joshua James McCoy is 3 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 50 to 60 pounds, with a skinny/thin build, brown eyes, and brown shoulder length-straight hair, with a fair complexion.
