September 27, 2024 11:15 a.m.

The Douglas Forest Protective Association’s Fire Season continues with more fires on Thursday.

Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at approximately 4:30 p.m. crews from DFPA, Central Douglas Fire and Rescue, Lookingglass Rural Fire District and an air attack from the Coos Forest Protective Association responded to an estimated half to 1- acre natural cover fire near the intersection of Flourney Valley Road and Doerner Road, northwest of Roseburg.

Pope said upon arrival at the scene, firefighters discovered a moderately active fire in grass and timber, posing no threat to nearby homes. All grown crew’s swift action successfully knocked down the fire’s forward spread. 90 percent of mop up was completed, and the area was left in a safe status overnight. Friday crews are continuing the mop up process until the area is cleared and turned to patrol status. Smoke may be visible in the areas as crews continue to work.

Pope said at approximately 6:15 p.m. DFPA and Riddle Fire Protection District crews responded to a 1/1000th-acre fire near the 4000 block of Canyonville-Riddle Road in the Riddle area. The fire was immediately extinguished. The area was mopped up and contained. The fire was human-caused and remains under investigation.

Pope said cooler weather and a limited amount of precipitation have many people under the impression that fire season is over and open burning is safe. Pope said fire season has not ended. It continues in the region with various danger levels and restrictions for everyone’s safety and protection.
