Roseburg Police arrested a man following a reported assault incident on Sunday.

An RPD report said at 1:00 p.m. 48-year-old William Wasyluk was allegedly bothering people in Stewart Park when another transient told him to stop. Wasyluck then reportedly stole that transient’s backpack and took it to his own camp in the pavilion. The transient went to the suspect’s camp and asked for his bag back, and Wasyluk allegedly told him to “come get it”.

The report said the transient then went to Wasyluk’s camp, pulled out a machete and threatened him. A separate transient reportedly grabbed Wayluck’s wrist and wrestled the machete from his hand, while the transient grabbed the other wrist. When the other transient let go of Wasyluk’s wrist, Wasyluck allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed the original transient in the left knee. At that point, others jumped in and helped detain Wasyluk and took the other knife from him.

The knife sliced a silver dollar chunk of the victim’s skin almost all the way off and nicked an artery. Another transient put a makeshift tourniquet on the leg and the victim walked away to the bathrooms. Medics transported him to CHI Mercy Medical Center where he received some staples to reattach the skin. Waysluk gave permission for one of the other transients to take charge of his belongings and his dog.

Waysluk was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree robbery, and unlawful use of a weapon. He was detained without bail.
