Roseburg Police jailed a man following an alleged assault incident Wednesday night.

An RPD report said at 8:30 p.m. officers responded to the corner of Southeast Cass Avenue and Southeast Rose Street downtown after a caller said there had been a stabbing. Officers contacted the victim who said had confronted a man, later identified as 34-year-old Levi Viviani, for how he was treating a woman in the area. The victim claimed that Viviani swung at him and struck him once.

The victim hit the suspect, who then reportedly pulled out a large metal pipe and struck the victim in the ribs, causing substantial pain. What the victim initially thought was a stab wound, turned out to be abrasions.

Officers located Vivani in the area of Southeast Jackson Street, after a tip from a nearby citizen. He admitted to the altercation but denied hitting the victim with anything. Surveillance and witness statements were consistent with the victim’s account of the incident.

Vivani was charged with second-degree counts of assault and disorderly conduct, and for unlawful use of a weapon. He was detained without bail.
