The Douglas Forest Protective Association has an update on the fire situation:
On Tuesday at approximately 5:00 p.m. a lightning storm trekked across Oregon, bringing over 1,000 recorded strikes. Of those, an estimated 130 strikes made air-to-ground contact in the Douglas District. DFPA activated reconnaissance and has been in initial attack since.
Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said on Thursday, one more fire has been confirmed in the area of the Jack Saddle Fire and the Lost Bucket Fire. The Shadow Creek Fire is estimated at 3 to 5 acres. Both DFPA and Umpqua National Forest firefighters are currently in the initial attack on this fire.
In the Glendale area:
*Middle Fork Fire: Located about 6.5 miles northeast of Glendale. It is estimated to be 1/10th of an acre in size. The fire continues to be in patrol status.
*Panther Creek Fire: Located about 5.5 miles north of Glendale. It is estimated to be 0.7 acres in size. This fire has been officially turned over to patrol status.
*Lawson Creek Fire: Located about 3.5 miles northeast of Glendale. It is estimated to be 3 to 4 acres in size. Mop-up will continue.
In the Elkton/Scottsburg area:
*Little Stony Fire Located about 6 miles north of Highway 38. It is estimated to be 2.1 acres. This fire is 70 percent mopped up and making good progress. Mop-up will continue through Friday.
*New Fire Starts:
*Carnes Road Fire: At approximately 2:35 p.m. crews from DFPA, and several other agencies responded to a confirmed 1/100th of an acre fire near the 3000 block of Carnes Road in Green. Upon arrival at the scene, a slow-moving fire was found, extinguished and mopped up quickly. The fire is human caused and is under investigation.
*Long Spur Fire: At approximately 10:15 a.m. DFPA and Central Douglas Fire and Rescue crews responded to a 1/100th of an acre fire about 2 miles west of Melqua Road, along Woodruff Mountain Road. Upon arrival at the scene, a man-made debris fire was found smoldering. Quick action was taken, and the fire was extinguished and mopped up. The fire is human caused and is under investigation.
No homes or structures were threatened by these fires.
