5 fire starts have been confirmed in the Douglas District following late afternoon lightning storms on Tuesday.
A release from the Douglas Forest Protective Association said the storms swept across the district at around 5:00 p.m. Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said strikes were recorded from Glendale to Elkton on the west side of the district and from Tiller to the north of Glide on the east side. Pope said DFPA immediately initiated aerial and ground lightning reconnaissance.
Confirmed fires in the Glendale area are:
*Middle Fork Fire: Located about 6.5 miles northeast of Glendale and estimated to be 1/10th of an acre in size. This fire is 100 percent lined, 100 percent mopped up and in patrol status
*Panther Creek Fire: Located about 5.5 miles north of Glendale and estimated to be 0.7 acres in size. This fire is 100 percent lined and in the process of being plumbed. Additional resources on this fire include a tender, fallers and a squad
*Lawson Creek Fire: Located about 3.5 miles northeast of Glendale and estimated to be 3-4 acres in size. This fire is 100 percent trailed and in the process of being plumbed and mopped up. Additional resources on this fire include a tender and a faller. A 20-person crew had been ordered. A helicopter will assist with suppression.
One confirmed fire is in the Rock Creek area:
*Jack Saddle Fire: Located about 14 miles northeast of Idleyld Park, on the Umpqua National Forest. This fire was located early Wednesday morning and is estimated to be 5 acres and creeping into the timber. Aerial resources are on the scene. Additional resources on this fire include a tender and a 20-person crew. DFPA will continue to be engaged on this fire and others in the area.
One confirmed fire is in the Elkton/Scottsburg area:
Little Stony Fire: Located about 6 miles north of Highway 38. It is estimated to be 2.1 acres and is currently creeping and smoldering. Additional resources from the Coos Forest Protective Association and Oregon Department of Forestry’s West Lane District are onsite and actively engaged. Additional resources have been ordered for this fire, including a tender, a set of fallers and a helicopter.
Currently no home or structures are threatened by the identified fires.
