Firefighters with the Douglas Forest Protective Association, Elkton Rural Fire Protection District, Kellog Rural Fire District, Scottsburg Rural Fire District and North Douglas Fire and EMS responded to a reported natural cover fire in the Elkton area, near milepost 32 on Highway 38 westbound at approximately 10:25 p.m. Saturday night.
Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said up arrival, firefighters found a quickly moving grass and brush fire climbing up a steep hillside. Pope said crews were able to stop the fire’s spread by just after 11:50 p.m. and had the 1.2 acre-fire 100 percent hand trailed by 3:30 a.m. Sunday. DFPA crews will remain on the scene mopping up until all the heat and smoke is contained. No structures were threatened by the fire. The fire was human caused and is currently under investigation.
