A Riddle man was jailed by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office on a theft charge on Friday afternoon.
A DCSO report said just before 12:40 p.m. a caller said someone had stolen items from a store in the 300 block of North Main Street in Canyonville before leaving in a two-door sedan. The caller provided the license plate number of the vehicle. A deputy ran the plate and went to the registered owners’ address in the 200 block of Northeast Division Street in Riddle.
A 50-year-old man was contacted at the residence. The man showed the deputy a receipt. The suspect was asked if store video was going to show him anything different. The man invoked his right to remain silent.
The deputy went to the store and contacted the reporting party who played him the video. It showed the suspect putting items down his pants and later taking out empty boxes. The deputy returned to the suspect’s home and placed him under arrest.
The man was charged with third-degree theft. He was detained without bail.
