Children’s literacy nonprofit SMART Reading is still seeking community volunteers.
The organization is looking for volunteer readers who will be placed at an elementary school or pre-school to read with children on a weekly basis, providing reading practice time, one-on-one attention and fun, low-stress experiences with books. No prior experience is necessary, and all training is provided.
SMART Reading Senior Program Manager Kris Dellsite said, “Right now, over half of Oregon’s young students are not reading at grade level, which is hugely concerning. Volunteering with SMART is a chance to have an impact right here in our community, one book and one child at a time”.
