BEACH HAZARDS STATEMENT FOR SOUTH CENTRAL OREGON COAST

March 16, 2024 6:15 a.m.

A Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect for the south central and Curry County coast through Saturday evening.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said a moderate to high risk of sneaker waves is expected. This applies to all beaches and shorelines of Curry, Coos, and Douglas counties.

Sneaker waves can run up significantly farther on beaches than normal, including over rocks and jetties. These waves can suddenly knock people off their feet and quickly pull them into the cold ocean waters, resulting in serious injury or death. Waves may also lift driftwood logs, trapping anyone caught underneath.

Forecasters said the risk of sneaker waves is higher on an incoming or rising tide. The next incoming tide is Saturday afternoon.

Beach goers should avoid climbing on rocks and jetties. Stay away from the ocean and remain out of the water to avoid hazardous conditions.
