The Zonta Club of Roseburg will celebrate a successful Dignity Drive on Wednesday, February 28th at 12:00 p.m.
Last October through November, the YMCA of Douglas County, Red Robin Gourmet Burgers and Brews, Sherm’s Thunderbird Market and the City of Roseburg Public Library, helped collect undergarments and sanitary products for women forced to flee their homes, due to domestic violence and pregnancy. A new record was set with over 630 items being collected.
These items will be presented to Safe Haven Maternity Home, Adapt-Crossroads, Samaritan Inn and Peace at Home who provide women housing and security.
At the meeting, a presentation will be given on Amelia Earhart, the first female aviator to fly non-stop across the Atlantic Ocean. Earhart went on to set multiple aviation records, reaching celebrity status. She was named visiting faculty for Purdue University’s aeronautical engineering program. Earhart disappeared in 1937 during her attempt to fly around the globe. After nearly 90 years, new oceanography imaging may have discovered the underwater resting place of her plane.
Earhart was a Zonta member, and the organization supports an Amelia Earhart Fellowship to help finance women seeking their PhD in aeronautical, space and related fields.
The presentation will provide more information about Earhart and what she would think about the current world, and the differences from the 1930s. The meeting will be held at Abby’s Legendary Pizza Annex building on Northeast Stephens in Roseburg. There is no charge to attend the meeting. Guests can purchase their own food off the menu.
