A Winter Storm Warning is in effect through 11:00 p.m. Thursday above 5,000 feet for mountain areas in parts of southern Oregon.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said heavy snow is expected with additional accumulations of 5 to 20 inches. Winds will gust as high as 45 miles per hour.
The Warning area includes the south-central Oregon Cascades. It applies to highways 58 near Willamette Pass, 138 and 230 near Diamond Lake Junction and Highway 62 near Crater Lake and Crater Lake National Park.
Forecasters said travel could be difficult in the high Cascades and impossible when attempting to travel to Crater Lake. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Snow levels will trend up to 5,000 feet as snow increases Thursday afternoon and evening. Snowfall rates could reach 1 inch per hour.
Travel is strongly discouraged because of dangerous conditions. Motorists should not take detours during winter storms. Those who must travel should keep tire chains, blankets, food, water, medications and a fully charged phone with them.
