A Sutherlin man was jailed after allegedly shooting a victim in the leg on Wednesday evening.

61-year-old Randy Goddard was charged with first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon for the incident, which occurred in the 4400 block of Nonpareil Road in Sutherlin.

Court documents said the shooting was reported to have happened in a shed behind the home. The woman reportedly had to drag herself to safety after she was shot.

The woman told police that Goddard blamed her for money that was taken by the federal government, according to the documents. She allegedly tried to help him with paperwork but then Goddard, “grabbed a black pistol, pointed it at her and shot her in the leg”, according to the court documents.

Goddard then allegedly pointed the gun at her again, as she crawled out of the shed to safety.

Goddard did not immediately surrender to police commands. Negotiators with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were able to speak to Goddard on the phone and were able to take him into custody around 7:00 p.m.

The victim was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center by ambulance.

Goddard is detained on $1 million bail.
