A transient tried to escape deputies at Cleveland Rapids Park northwest of Roseburg early Tuesday.
A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said shortly before 2:00 a.m. a deputy contacted 23-year old Skyler Trent at the park in the 200 block of Cleveland Park Road. Trent allegedly originally gave a false name, but was recognized. A deputy made contact again but Trent allegedly ran away, jumping into the Umpqua River and starting to swim downstream.
Deputies walked the riverbank, following the suspect and giving him verbal commands. After several minutes, Trent gave up and came to shore. He was taken into custody without incident.
Trent had reportedly not updated his sex offender registration, though he has been living in a new location for approximately six months. He is a registered sex offender with a felony sex offense conviction.
Trent was charged with giving false information to a police officer, third-degree escape, interfering with a peace officer, a felony count of failure to report as a sex offender and for 4 warrants. Trent was detained on $10,000 bail.
