The deadline is approaching for voters to return their ballots in a special district election for the Oakland School District.

Voters in that district are being asked to approve a $6 million bond measure to renovate schools and replace a gymnasium. The gym would be at Lincoln Middle School and would replace the facility currently used by middle school students at the Washington Elementary School. Other projects include:

*Construction of secure entryways at all three schools in the district

*Additional outdoor lighting for security

*Upgrades to the softball field for Title IX compliance

*Paving of some parking areas

Other funds would go to site improvements, demolition, furnishings, equipment and insurance costs.

The district has said that passage of the proposal would result in it receiving a $4 million State of Oregon grant. The estimated tax rate is $1.15 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

Kathy Stutzman of the County Elections Division said ballots can be mailed in but must be postmarked by Tuesday. Stutzman said they can also be taken to the County Clerk’s Office. It is normally open weekdays until 5:00 p.m. but will be open until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Ballots can also be taken to a drop box located in front of Sutherlin City Hall on East Central Avenue.
