Work is underway to widen the Interstate 5 northbound off-ramp at the Garden Valley Boulevard interchange in Roseburg.

Dan Latham of the Oregon Department of Transportation said traffic congestion is a frequent problem at that location. Latham said the ramp has a left-turn lane onto Northwest Garden Valley Boulevard and a shared lane for motorists traveling straight onto Northwest Mulholland Drive or turning right. During peak travel times, vehicles in the shared lane sometimes back up to the freeway travel lanes.

Prime contractor Knife River Materials will also replace the traffic signal poles and hardware, install new push-button pedestrian beacons, upgrade sidewalks and ADA curb ramps and repave the off-ramp and intersection. To accommodate the new turn lane, a retaining wall will be built between the ramp and Munson Court.

Work will mainly happen on weeknights from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. from Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Latham said most work over the next two weeks will take place from the right lane of the off-ramp. That lane will be closed at night for this work. Motorists should watch for cones and other traffic control devices.
