On Wednesday at their weekly business meeting, the Douglas County Board of Commissioners issued a proclamation calling upon all residents of the county to observe the month of October as the National Month of Community Service and Make a Difference Day, which is celebrated every year on the fourth Saturday of October.

The proclamation was presented by Commissioner Chris Boice on behalf of the board, and acknowledged that, “As a county, we share in the desire to promote civility, kindness, and respect for all people, and to unitedly act on that desire by meaningfully serving others and rekindle our volunteer spirit”.

The commissioners honored the work being done by the local Make a Difference Day campaign committee, their community partners and projects sites. The local event will happen Saturday October 28th and marks the second annual day of service in the county. Nationally, it is the largest day of community service in the U.S. and is a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. In Douglas County, several non-profit organizations, areas businesses, and faith-based groups have come together with the hope of revitalizing the spirit of volunteerism locally. This year they have secured 15 project sites and have over 100 volunteers signed up so far.
