The Paul Morgan Observatory at Umpqua Community College is holding a public star party on October 13th at 8:00 p.m. along with a solar eclipse observing event from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on October 14th.

Those attending will experience the celestial wonder of the event as astronomers provide a live digital view for all to safely see on screen and through special telescopes. UCC’s location means area residents can see the eclipse for the maximum amount of time. The top things to see on October 14th include:

*The Ring of Fire: Watch as the moon creates a fiery ring around the sun, leaving a glowing halo in the sky

*Unique Shadows: Witness the peculiar crescent-shaped shadows on the ground, creating a stunning natural spectacle

*Changing Colors: Observe the shifting colors of the landscape as the sunlight dwindles

On the evening of the 13th, people will be able to see Nebula, star clusters and planets

Those viewing from outside the observatory should bring lawn chairs and safety glasses. The events will be held whether it is clear or cloudy. Only rain will cause a cancellation. To get to the observatory on the UCC campus, park in the lower lot at the Technology Center and walk uphill. Handicapped parking is available at the top of the hill. Admission is free.

The Paul Morgan Observatory is only all-digital observatory in the northwest.
