An in-custody death investigation is underway at the Douglas County Jail by the Oregon State Police.

A Douglas County Sheriff’s Office report said on Saturday at approximately 3:20 p.m. corrections deputies were alerted of an adult in custody found by other AIC’s collapsed in the dormitory shower. Lieutenant Brad O’Dell said deputies found 49-year old Jason Travis Jerscheid of Canyonville unconscious and not breathing. O’Dell said deputies began lifesaving efforts and called 911 for emergency services.

When EMS arrived, they continued lifesaving efforts which were ultimately unsuccessful. Jerscheid was pronounced deceased at the scene. OSP, an outside agency, and the Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office were called to investigate at the request of Sheriff John Hanlin. There were no apparent indications of foul play.

Hanlin said, “My most sincere condolences go out to those who knew and cared for Mr. Jerscheid. I await the final investigation report but am confident that those in our custody remain safe and well cared for”.

O’Dell said an autopsy took place on Sunday at the Oregon State Medical Examiners Office in Clackamas. The results of the autopsy are pending at this time.
