An Air Quality Alert is in effect through Sunday at 4:00 p.m. for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said wildfires burning in the region combined with forecast conditions will cause air quality levels to fluctuate and reach unhealthy levels at times.

The Alert applies to eastern Douglas, Josephine, Jackson, Klamath and northern Lake counties.

Forecasters said smoke levels can change rapidly depending on the weather. People at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and those who are pregnant.

When smoke levels are high, residents should

*Stay inside if possible

*Keep windows and doors closed. If it’s too hot, run air conditioning on recirculate or consider moving to a cooler location.

*Avoid strenuous outdoor activity

*Use a high efficiency particulate (HEPA) filter in indoor ventilation systems or portable air purifiers

*Be aware of smoke in the area and avoid places with the highest levels

*Those with a breathing plan for a medical condition, should follow it and keep any needed medications refilled
