An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect from 1:00 p.m. Sunday through 11:00 p.m. Thursday for much of southern Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service said dangerously hot temperatures between 105 degrees and 110 degrees are expected. At times, overnight low temperatures will not fall below 70 degrees for some locations.

The Warning area includes Central Douglas County, Josephine and Jackson counties and eastern Curry County.

Forecasters said extreme heat will significantly increase the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities.

Residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

People should take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Call 911 in the case of a heat stroke.
