Good progress was made on the Flat Fire burning in Curry County, on Thursday.

A Forest Service update said ten helitack crew members returned to Fantz Ranch in the eastern portion of the fire to keep mopping up, felling hazard trees to ensure safe work conditions and thoroughly cooling hot spots as heat was detected. Near Game Lake and also in the southwest corner of the fire, aerial firing operations continued to increase fire line depth. The update said this develops deeper and more effective fire line in preparation for expected seasonally dry vegetation, hot temperatures, low relative humidity and wind that will create conditions that could challenge the fire line. Firefighters along the western edge of the fire continued to actively seek heat to mop up and found no areas of concern.

A community meeting will be held in front of the Agness library Friday at 2:00 p.m.

The Flat Fire is listed at 31,471 acres and twenty-eight percent contained. 1,092 people are assigned to the fire. It is human caused and is still under investigation.
