Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association responded to an operational fire in north county Thursday afternoon.

Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said the Jackalope Fire was reported just before 2:15 p.m. and was located in an active logging operation about four and a half miles northwest of Drain, and three and a half miles north of Umpqua Highway 38. Pope said due to the quick response of the onsite watchman, the forward spread of the 1/100th of an acre fire was knocked down upon DFPA’s arrival. Three engines actively engaged in mop-up and had the area cleared by 4:00 p.m.

Pope said with the current heat advisory, dry weather, and the expectation of gusty afternoon winds, fire weather hazards will increase. Residents are asked to take precautions when working and recreating outdoors, and follow the current regulations that are in place for everyone’s safety.

In the Douglas District, fire danger and public use restrictions are listed as high, and the Industrial Fire Precaution Level is at level 2. More fire season information at www.dfpa.net.
