A Roseburg woman died in a single vehicle accident Wednesday afternoon.

A report from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said just after 4:30 p.m. a witness saw a sedan traveling north on Garden Valley Road in the turn lane near Heartwood Lane. The witness said the vehicle slowed down and was drifting into the northbound lane, narrowly missing the witness’s southbound vehicle before leaving the roadway heading into the ditch line. The sedan then went off the west side of the road, striking a CenturyLink box and a fence before coming to rest against a tree.

The report said a second witness saw a large dirt cloud that had been caused by the victim’s vehicle. The witnesses immediately stopped and checked on the driver who initially had a faint pulse but lost it prior to the arrival of emergency medical personnel. One witness said that no odor of alcohol was noticed when he checked on the woman.

Paramedics transported the driver, sixty-five-year old Cindy Mattson, to CHI Mercy Medical Center where she was later declared deceased. Next of kin was notified and the sedan was towed from the accident scene.
