Douglas County Public Works Department, Operations and Maintenance Division plans to begin work on its annual chip seal program on roadways in the county on the week of July 10th.

A County release said work is scheduled to continue through mid-September. Chip seal work is typically performed weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., depending on weather and material availability. Traffic in the work areas will be controlled by flaggers during active work hours.

The chip seal program is the application of a special protective wearing surface to an existing pavement. The surface treatment combines one or more layers of asphalt with one or more layers of fine aggregate. Motorists are asked to watch out for posted construction signs, speed reduction warnings and flaggers in these areas throughout the summer:

*The Azalea area, south of Canyonville

*Melrose/Garden Valley area, west of Roseburg

*Elkhead Road, east of Rice Hill

Motorists should expect up to twenty-minute delays, and should seek alternate routes whenever possible.
