A Myrtle Creek man is in jail, charged with the murder of his daughter-in-law as a result of a shooting on Friday.

Lieutenant Brad O’Dell of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said that morning shortly before 9:30 a.m. 911 dispatchers received a report that a woman had been shot at her home in the 100 block of Adams Loop in Green.

O’Dell said deputies and medical personnel arrived on the scene to discover that 47-year old Amy Jo Coder was suffering from a gunshot wound. She was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center and was later transferred to an out of area hospital. Coder succumbed to her wounds on Sunday afternoon.

Deputies quickly identified Coder’s father-in-law, 65-year old David Foster Coder as the alleged assailant. He was apprehended and taken into custody within a half hour of the first 911 call.

Coder was initially charged with attempted murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. Those charges have since been modified to include murder. Coder is detained without bail.

O’Dell said the Douglas County Major Crimes Team is investigating the homicide, with DCSO as the lead agency. The Major Crimes Team consists of investigators from DCSO, Roseburg Police Department and Oregon State Police working in consultation with the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office.
