Troopers with Oregon State Police helped a homeowner after a bear got trapped in a chicken coop early Wednesday morning.

Information from OSP said the incident took place on Little River Road about seven miles out of Glide at 12:30 a.m. The homeowner was at the property alone, and attempted to scare the bear. Believing the bear had already eaten her chickens, the property owner shot the bear with a small caliber handgun.

OSP said after that the situation shifted from worrying about what the bear might do in the chicken coop, to being concerned what the animal might do now that it was wounded. The trooper arrived on the scene and dispatched the bear.

OSP said after the fur quit flying and the situation was assessed, no more chickens had been devoured, but the bear had eaten all the eggs in the coop.

The homeowner told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that the bear had eaten one chicken, and fell through the top of the coop when he came back for seconds. She said the situation spanned a period of two hours.
