Classes featuring forest development subjects are coming soon, from the Oregon State University Extension Service.

On Wednesday May 24th, “Mowing for Wildlife” will be offered from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The class is a field tour where participants will travel to Fish Creek Flat in the Umpqua National Forest to learn from wildlife biologists about recent wildlife enhancement projects. The tour will visit pre and post mastication and mowing sites that have been, or will be, treated to regenerate shrub and meadow habitat.

On Thursday June 1st, “Growing Big Trees” will begin a four-part series. Those taking part will learn from experts including a family forest landowner, about their research and experience managing older, mature, late-seral forests in Douglas County.  It starts with a lecture style presentation from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Extension Office on Southeast Douglas Avenue. Three follow-up field tours will be held in June and July.

The “Mowing for Wildlife” class will be held for free while the “Growing Big Trees” series is $20 per person.
