A woman accidently shot herself in Sutherlin Sunday night, and the man with her has been jailed on firearm and other charges.

Captain Kurt Sorenson of the Sutherlin Police Department said shortly after 7:00 p.m. police and medical personnel responded to Burger King in the 100 block of Ponderosa Avenue after a report came in that a woman had been shot. The woman was transported to CHI Mercy Medical Center and was later transferred to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend in Springfield.

Sorenson said the man who accompanied the woman had told 911 dispatchers that she had been shot while standing in the parking lot of the business. It was later determined that the woman had accidently shot herself while in the bathroom of the store. The man, identified as 62-year old Gary Miller of Eugene, was later arrested on charges of being a felon in possession of a firearm, initiating a false police report and tampering with evidence. He was detained without bail. The firearm was ultimately recovered and seized.

Sorenson said anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call SPD at 459-2211. The department can also be contacted by email at: policerecords@ci.sutherlin.or.us.

Sorenson said the condition of the woman is not known by SPD.
