On Wednesday, the Oregon House passed House Bill 3584, also known as the School Emergency Notifications Act.
A release from the House Majority Office said the legislation would ensure parents and guardians are electronically notified during a school emergency and are kept informed throughout the incident. It was drafted after a school lockdown in Portland that left parents and guardians seeking transparency and other vital information.
The bill would also make sure parents and guardians are notified about how long it took to resolve the issue, and other critical information all within 24 hours of the incident.
The legislation passed unanimously and now heads to the Oregon Senate for consideration.
