After narrowing the search for a new superintendent to three candidates, the South Umpqua School District Board of Directors has opted to instead search for a short-term leader for the 2023-24 school year.

On Thursday the candidates participated in a day-long Finalist Forum where they toured several of the district’s schools and facilities, talked to staff and met community members in an evening meet-and-greet event. The candidates were Grant School District #3 Superintendent Louis Dix, Daniel Endicott, principal of Sunnyslope Elementary School in Roseburg, and Brookings-Harbor School District Superintendent David Marshall.

Board Chair Jeff Johnson said after careful deliberation and reviewing feedback from staff and the community, the board decided to pivot their search to looking for an interim superintendent. Johnson said the board will meet on Wednesday, March 15th to discuss the search process as well as qualities and qualifications in choosing an individual to take over for the upcoming school year.

Johnson thanked the Screening Advisory Committee volunteers for their time and efforts, as well as staff and community members who participated in Thursday’s events. Johnson said, “The information and input we gathered from all involved was invaluable in making our decision, I am confident we will find a quality interim superintendent to lead this great district over the coming year”.

Current Superintendent Kate McLoughlin will shift to the role of director of student achievement for the 2023-24 school year.
