The Castle Fire, burning on the Umpqua National Forest, is listed at 1,727 acres with zero percent containment as of late Wednesday.

The fire has been determined to have been caused by lightning. .

An update from California Incident Management Team 3 said crews have done significant work to improve and reinforce containment lines for upcoming elevated fire weather. The fire is primarily burning needle litter and small trees in the understory. Firefighter operations are primarily focused on keeping fire within its current containment lines north of Castle Rock Fork and east of the road in Black Rock Fork. Firefighters are using firing operations to stop fire spread and fight fire on their terms for safety reasons.

High relative humidity recovery is expected overnight with sunny and warm weather Thursday, along with gusty winds, similar to Wednesday.

An Umpqua National Forest Closure Order for lands, roads and trails in the area remains in place. The South Umpqua Falls Campground and South Umpqua Falls Day Use Area are still closed as well.

The Umpqua National Forest is in High Fire Danger and Public Use restrictions Stage 2 across the whole forest.
