The Castle Fire burning on the Umpqua National Forest is at 1,550 acres with zero percent contained as of late Tuesday.

An update from California Incident Management Team 3 said moderate to active fire behavior was observed, and backing and flanking fire and potential for short range spotting. Firefighters have been working on containment lines and preparing roads by removing understory fuels and hazardous trees. Handcrews, engines, water tenders, dozers and a variety of other heavy equipment are currently on scene with more requested. 435 personnel are working at the fire which is burning 23 miles northeast of Tiller.

Near critical fire weather conditions are expected on Thursday. This includes gusty afternoon winds with hot and dry weather. No evacuation orders or warnings are in place. A closure order continues from officials with the Umpqua National Forest. This impacts land, roads and trails in the fire area. The South Umpqua Falls Campground and Day Use Areas remain closed due to the fire.

The Umpqua National Forest is in High Fire Danger and Public Use Restrictions Stage 2.
